The Spoils of Petulance (V.44)
A versatile chamber piece, scored for string quintet using only open
strings,
which can be played by virtually any level ensemble.
Don't ask where the title came from; the idea behind the piece, which
is as fun to play as it is to listen to: its subtitle is "sonata for open
strings", and while the 'sonata' may not be accurate (I simply
love the sonority
of the word), the rest is. It is a series of scenes, wherein the
quintet create
numerous different textures and themes, rhythmically and melodically
engaging, using only the open strings of the instruments.
