Excursions for flute, V.116
Excursions is a set of seven one-minute
miniatures for unaccompanied flute which illustrate the compositional
process by all starting identically, with one set of notes. This simple
gesture, which is always the same in register, pitch, rhythm and tempo,
leads to seven very different solos, but each are also completely
derived from the harmonies, intervals, and contours implied by the
germ-set.
Of moderate to advanced difficulty, Excursions
can be a valuable tool in teaching character and interpretation, but
also stands on its own merits as a concert solo programmable in almost
any recital.
