Point of Departure (V.101-4)
from Second Glances
Originally an improvisation, Point of
Departure is a quirky modal melody and a free solo section over
a bass which is open to many styles, from Bop to Samba to Bossa Nova.
The interest in the piece comes when the melody ventures off into other
modes while the bass stays in the original home mode. They end up in 2
Dorian modes a tritone apart, but the harmonies, made of a combination
of both modes, allow them to coexist.
