10 after 2 (V.101-2)
from Second Glances
Serial jazz, or music in a style incorporating the ensemble and
improvisation of jazz which also employs a serial tonal structure, has
been problematic from the start. Although the mingling of the two were
inevitable, jazz and nonfunctional harmony seemed not ever to mix in a
practical or convincing way.
10 after 2 explores ways
to solve this dilemma and reconcile their differences. Here, amid
written solos and improvised sections, hexachords are used in a similar
manner as chord or modes, and in a sense even more freedom is given the
ensemble.
