Finale of Symphony #3 (Beethoven)
I have always heard the finale from Beethoven's Eroica symphony as
a string quartet; beyond the frequent phrases which take on a chamber
music feel, the essential material of the entire movement can be
expressed
in four voices, and because the woodwinds and brass often serve to
merely
puncuate or augment the strings, the grand musical gestures Beethoven
uses
become even more impassioned when heard by that unmistakable,
unparalleled
sound produced by a string quartet. The entire final movement is
arranged here,
in the original key and only deviating from Beethoven's original
markings when
an effect unique to string quartet repertoire is employed.
Scored for string quartet. 11 minutes, 475
measures.
