the river's rain

i. follow.
we are they who are the you you do not know
tonight we come to sing and dance for you
and tomorrow we’ll be gone
tomorrow we’ll be free.

we fight to live and laugh and love
and tomorrow we’ll be free
we stop to love and laugh and die...

but tonight,
the door belies a window
in the street, a river streams
...time will be our breath
and breath, our words
and words, our time...
but dawn comes quickly, and tomorrow we’ll be free.

ii. i was lying on my back
eyes open
the clock on the wall ticked slowly
Slowly.
the time...
the time...
...it’s Time.

the sun was setting  in the woods
down, down...
the river flows beneath
below our lives
winding mindlessly,
stretching its ever-seeking reach through the velvet curtain
of Night
around the clock, a halo of light
shimmering radiance
her eyes find
the window
outside, the river flows
the sun peers inside
inside...the window dark with dusty smoke
the clock sets the time to the rapturous dance
the sun touches the hands
pushes them on

a muffled cry
as rain of her eyes
swims to the cracks in the floor

the hand unclenched
falls limp against the window pane
slides gently down
opening to the Sun
which, voiceless, enters the room
Again.

iii. the river’s rain doth fall with an upward glance
and smiles at noble passersby
we are the denizens of the night
that shine upon the window pane
the cloak of time enraptured in a chilled evening
the smoke of the light doth burn
and trickles down the river’s edge
to where our feet once were

the moon looks down from atop
his watery grave.

We are naked.

We see nothing

save the blood-black rain of our hands
upon the moon’s footsteps
soft footsteps in the Night.

we walk on
our feet and our hands
our hands hide our faces
and tomorrow?
tomorrow we’ll be free.
tomorrow we’ll be gone.

iv. listen to the dance!
of orange eyes and flighty skirts
the sparks of light in intimate darkness

the world within the rain
breathes soft on the neck of the street
the moon falls and rises a thousand times
in the River, where they dance
as the Rain makes love to the Night

and we bleed for morning
on the street, we watch, and wait

the river’s rain doth fall on us,
drenching our clothes

Dawn breaks the night
our eyes open
we stand on the bank in our finery
dripping our lives into puddles
And the sun looks up to us
but the dance is no more

The Night has Died.
The sun scorches the sky

we see nothing
save the blood-black rain of our hands
upon the moon’s gravestone

Tomorrow has come.

v. Daylight sees with different eyes
Night has fled
bled to Death in its own tears of joy

we are blinded
we see Nothing.

we have not even blood to give
the River joins the Air
the moon hides her face

We wait on the street in ripped clothing
and peer through the window
from the outside

Our world is not.
the Night has bled
its final drop of rain-soaked tears.
Dawn breaks our lives.
We are free.
We are gone.
