Muses (V.90)
A setting of various excerpts
from ancient Greek texts about the Muses,
in
Greek
with IPA transliterations, for mezzo soprano, flute/alto
flute, oboe/english
horn, clarinet, violin, viola, cello, guitar, and percussion: hand
drum, vibraphone, finger
cymbals, suspended cymbal, crotales, claves, tambourine, triangle (2
players)
A setting
akin to an opera scene, using texts, effects, and timbres to create a
string of musical settings praising the Muses,
the Greek goddesses who served as inspiration to all artists. Vocalist
and instrumentalists alike take part in interesting acoustical effects
and microtones to imitate the Greek tonoi and harmonia.
Jeanne-Marie Schwarz, who premiered Muses, has said:
“Patrick Valentino's choral
and solo vocal
compositions exhibit a deep
understanding
of the workings of the human
voice. "
