| Ave Maria (V.85-3) from Songs of the Virgin A setting for soprano and piano. The soprano part is lilting; simple in contour but placed against an ambient piano which creates the harmonic world in which the words float. Extended piano techniques and unorthodox notation are explained in performance notes. This Ave closes a set of three songs inspired by Mary. The piano creates an ethereal atmosphere above which a lilting, simplistic soprano line entones the immortal text.
