| So Low (V.61) Mix equal parts bass and contralto clarinets. Shake vigorously. Duet in three movements: 1. Ragtime! 2. Tango!! 3. Cacophony!!! So Low was written in June 2003 to celebrate those low-down clarinets without which woodwind ensembles would be better balanced and more eloquent. The first two movements use rhythmic variation on straightforward themes. The last movement is an answer to my friend, who had the singular misfortune of being a bass clarinettist. He said of his trade: “The best part is no one ever knows if you hit a wrong note!” |
