Genesis (V.21)
String Octet scored for three violins, two violas, two cellos, and
bass. For advanced to professional ensembles, Genesis is a highly structured and
virtuosic piece, requiring exact tempi, relentless energy and deep
intellectual and emotional synergy.
The numerical
proportion known as the Golden Mean has been known throughout
history as a standard of aesthetic beauty, in fields from architecture
to music.
Genesis, written in
Moscow in
2004, is an experiment to see if a totally abstract piece can appeal to
its audience aesthetically by employing this ratio in
every aspect of its form and content.
For this piece I strucutred the form, in fractal segments, the melodic
pitch material, and all the harmonic strucutres and rhythms on the
Golden Mean.
