Nunc Dimittis from Canticles (V.122-3)
Taken from the set of three New Testament Canticles,
Nunc Dimittis (Canticle of
Simeon) is a colorful and evocative setting of the text from Luke.
Traditionally sung
at Compline, or Night Prayer, the Nunc Dimittis' text is at once a
prayer of thanksgiving
and a benediction, a charge and a blessing.
The famous first line, "Lord let now your servant depart in peace,
according
to your word", occurs in a lilting solo, slightly reminiscent of
plainchant, over rich
choral harmonies. From there more choral textures dominate, only to
return to the
original texture for a muted close.
Of moderate to advanced difficulty, and scored for SATB choir with one
solo voice, Nunc Dimittis is complex enough for the concert program and
short
enough for liturgical use.
