Magnificat from Canticles (V.122-2)
Taken from the set of three New Testament Canticles,
the Magnificat (Canticle of
Mary) is a colorful and evocative setting of the text from Luke.
Traditionally sung
at Vespers, or Evening Prayer, the Magnificat is an ecstatic song of
praise and statement of faith.
The famous first line, "My soul magnifies the Lord", explodes upward in
a kaleidoscope of harmonic color, and each section that follows has its
own unique tonal and timbral landscape.
Of moderate to advanced difficulty, and scored for divisi SATB choir
with short solos, Magnificat is complex enough for the concert program
and
short
enough for liturgical use.
