Benedictus from Canticles (V.122-1)
Taken from the set of three New Testament Canticles,
Benedictus (Canticle of
Zechariah) is a colorful and evocative setting of the text from Luke,
when Zecariah sings this blessing over his son John the Baptist.
Traditionally sung at Lauds, or Morning Prayer, the text is a
prayer of thanksgiving and hope, praise and glory.
The setting is in turns muscular and lyrical, following the text in a
declamatory style. A piece of advanced difficulty, and scored for
divisi SATB choir, Benedictus is complex enough for the concert program
and
short enough for liturgical use.
