| Motets (V.119) Usable as liturigcal or concert music, independently or as a set, these five Motets take ancient church chants and set them in a modern choral setting. The Ave Maria is set in gentle, organically evolving imitative lines, colored with striking harmony. Divinum Mysterium is cast in an acessible form, in which vocalises accompany solo lines. The rhythmic drive of Veni Creator Spiritus reflects the boundless energy of the text, with shifting meters and inexpected accents. De Profundis utilitzes vocal effects and improvisation, as well as a wordless duet and extremes of low register to reflect the distance and desperation of the text. Repetitions set in as a cathartic ritual. The peaceful purity of the In Paradisum is carefull maintained throughout a shimmering unfolding of imitative lines and gentle harmonies.
