| Victimae Paschali Laudes (V.118-8) Sequence for Easter Sunday Victimae Paschali Laudes is one of only 4 sequences still used in Catholic Liturgy (two others are set in Ritual Chants as well) and is sung on Easter Sunday before the Alleluia. This setting retains the antiphonal character of the sequence by making the melody optionally performable by both the men and women of the choir. The harmony is formed either by sustaining a melody note as the melody continues on, or intoning a previous fragment of the melody, making the creation of harmony simple even for the most basic choir. The instruments (organ and harp) are likewise optional, allowing for a variety of performance possibilities and ease of use by any size forces. Ritual

church services or in concerts. Most are for specific services, while
some are for general use. They are designed to be as practical as
possible, thus allowing their performance by ensembles of wide ranging
composition, ability level, and aesthetic direction (as is typical in
today's church music ministries). Their intent is to embue the ancient
chants with new vitality, and make them more engaging and accessible to
modern ears.
