Of Seas and Self (V.113)
Written for the Nashua Symphony's Ripple
Effect
project, Of
Seas and Self marries original poetry with music to create a
short song cycle exploring the idea of identity.
The five songs flow in one uninterrupted gesture. A slow, atmospheric
opening reflects the unknown nature of identity; this is followed by a
quirky scherzo in the voice of a self-assured young girl. A central
musing leads to a violent interlude, before a contemplative finale,
where the singer reads a letter written to herself over the orchestral
accompaniment.
The work is scored for solo soprano voice and a chamber orchestra of
single winds, horn, and strings.
