Theme from Finale of Symphony #3 (Mahler)

The final movement of Mahler's third symphony centers around a pure theme
in D major; a quiet perception of beauty with a gentle yet persistent compulsion
to carry the listener forward. Upon first hearing it, I felt immediately that, unlike
many moments in Mahler's orchestral music, this theme lent itself to the intimate
nature of chamber music. I chose to use the cello because I think it is perhaps the
most beautiful sounding instrument, and closest in timbre to the human voice.
The organ accompaniment makes the piece a suitable meditation in churches.

Scored for cello and organ. 3-4 minutes, 51 measures.
